History of Dwight

The Dwight Schools began with the flagship campus, Dwight School, which was established in 1872. Below is a timeline of events highlighting the schools transformation from a single building to the global consortium that it is today.

1872
  • Dr. Julius Sachs (brother of Samuel Sachs a partner in the international banking firm of Goldman, Sachs & Company) opens The Sachs School, eventually to become Dwight School. The name is later changed to the Franklin School.
  • 1880
  • The New York School of Languages is founded as an academy of classical studies.
  • 1888
  • The New York School of Languages is renamed Dwight School in honor of Timothy Dwight, Yale’s President, who partnered with the school and replaced the traditional Greek and Latin entrance elements with math and science.
  • 1967
  • Mr. Stephen Spahn becomes chancellor of Dwight School.
  • 1972
  • Chancellor Spahn and Sir Maurice Bowra, Warden of Wadham College at Oxford University, found The Woodside Park School in London, which is now Dwight London.
  • Dwight becomes the first independent school in the United States to establish a permanent international campus.
  • 1980
  • Franklin adopts the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program.
  • 1993
  • Dwight relocates to 18 West 89th Street and moves into additional space in 291 Central Park West.
  • 2005
  • With the opening of the Woodside Preschool on Riverside Boulevard, now known as Dwight Early Childhood Division, Dwight School becomes the first school to offer the IB PYP Program ages 2-4.
  • 2009
  • Dwight opened Dwight School Canada , located on Shawnigan Lake, Vancouver Island.
  • Dwight entered into the first joint diploma program in China with the Capital Normal High School, attached to Capital Normal University, in Beijing.
  • 2010
  • Dwight was chosen from 120 foreign schools by the Seoul government to open Dwight School Seoul.
  • as a model IB School for five hundred forty students in preschool through grade 12.
  • 2012
  • Dwight School Seoul opens.
  • Dwight School marks its 140th year, making it one of the most enduring independent schools in New York City.
  • 2013
  • Dwight School Seoul reaches International Baccalaureate World School Status, becoming the first IB Model School in South Korea. Dwight School Seoul became the first permanent campus in Asia, also receiving IB Diploma Programme Authorization.
  • Dwight School Seoul named 2013 Best Brand Award by The Korea Herald.
  • 2014
  • Dwight School Seoul was granted membership in the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Council of International Schools(CIS).
  • Dwight School Seoul receives candidacy for accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Council of International Schools (CIS).
  • Completing Dwight Seoul’s IB authorization, Dwight School Seoul received authorisation for Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP), becoming the first IB World School in Seoul to achieve authorization across all three programmes.
  • Shanghai Qibao Dwight High School, located in the Minhang District of Shanghai, opens its doors in September, as the first independent Chinese-American collaborative high school in China.
