Early Childhood Division

Dwight School Seoul Early Childhood Division (ECD) offers the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate to children ages three through six. We believe in a holistic approach to developing foundational skills that support the growth of each of our unique students. Through our units of inquiry, our students learn and grow through play, relationship building, purposeful learning spaces, and symbolic exploration and expression.

Purposeful Play

In our ECD, play acts as the driver for inquiry. We balance student-initiated play and teacher-initiated experiences to provide hands-on learning experiences in our units of inquiry. Play provides benefits for social, emotional, physical, and mental development for our diverse student community. It also allows students to authentically explore and develop in the areas of language, mathematics, social studies, arts and PSPE (Personal, Physical, and Social Education).

Building Relationships

Early learners develop trust and belonging through their relationships. This is significant in the development of their independence, individuality, and self-confidence. We focus on international social and communication skill building in order to build positive relationships with peers, teachers, family, and community members. We recognize that uninterrupted time for play strongly supports social development as well.

Symbolic Exploration and Expression

Our students learn language through experience, and therefore, they become literate and numerate with increasing sophistication over time. As an international community, we recognize that our students come with diverse cultural and family backgrounds. This means that each of our students has a unique language profile, and so therefore, we personalize learning to meet their individual learning needs. We develop language and mathematics symbolic understanding through our units of inquiry by playing, singing, speaking, problem-solving, writing, counting, patterning, creating, and more.

Learning Spaces

As a PYP school, we believe that the learning environment is a fundamental part of effective education. We provide learning spaces that spark inquiry and promote exploration. As students are valued at the center of our program, they have voice and choice in their learning spaces. Our classrooms provide opportunities for hands-on, transdisciplinary learning through play.
