Nicole originally comes from the coastal city of East London in South Africa. She has been in Korea for almost 15 years, 12 of those years working in the Early Years in different international kindergartens. She is a passionate teacher who loves teaching the young minds at Dwight School Seoul.
What is your role at Dwight School Seoul?
I am the Preschool A (4-5 years old) teacher at Dwight.
What made you decide to work in an education setting? And what is your philosophy?
Being from South Africa, education is not always readily available to all children. Education was never in my initial plan, but somehow the powers that be lead you where you need to be. When I started teaching, I promised myself that in whatever educational situation I was in, I would always encourage my students to be passionate about learning and never take for granted that they have this opportunity. I believe that if I show the children around me love, care and equip them with the tools to do things for themselves, they will grow up to be independent life-long learners who are always asking questions. I have a big personality, so my classroom is never quiet. The students are always having fun and are actively engaged in their learning.
What do you like the most about working at DSS?
I love that we have a family-like community. As much as our students are our main priority, I feel that the parents and fellow teachers all play a vital role in making Dwight School Seoul one of the best schools to work at.
What are your interests and or hobbies?
When I have the time to do things for myself, I enjoy going outside with my kids or meeting friends for coffee. I love singing so pre-Covid enjoyed some Karaoke times.
Who inspires you and how?
Everyday my students teach me more about myself. They are who inspire me to do better, to be a better teacher and to push myself out of my comfort zone.
What is the best book or production that you have read, watched, or listened to lately?
To be honest, as a mother of two I have little time for myself. I can say that I am up to date on all the new animated movies and can sing every song off by heart.
What one particular social issue calls out to you and why?
The availability of education to all children is something that really stirs many emotions in me. There are so many children in the world who would love to live the life we give our own children. I would love to see a bigger emphasis put on this throughout the world.
What is one fun fact about you that others may not know or may surprise them?
I used to play professional tennis during my school/university years. It’s something that I would definitely love to do again, time permitting.
Why would you tell a prospective family to choose DSS?
Dwight is definitely the best fit for your child. The small class size, and the expertise of the teachers allow for a safe, fun and caring environment which enables the children to reach their full potential.
